If you are thinking of starting a website but doesn't know exactly what to do, or want a guide, this is for you! Step-to-step instructions in building a website! ^__^
First of all, find a good webhost. If you aren't sure, the Resources page will give you some suggestions. Make sure the host fits your need, too. If you are planning to create a big website, 50MB or more storage should be enough if you have a separate image host. You might also want a FTP server if you are planning to use your host for an oekaki or topsites. Another important thing is bandwidth. Good hosts give plenty.
Now, get a decent layout. If you are a beginner, you can use a FreeWebs layout if that's your host. Otherwise, you can get someone else to make you a layout (some websites have free layout services), or go to a free layouts website like FreeLayouts.com. You can also try to make a layout by yourself. Try to be original, and make sure the layout is not eye-hurting or terribly hard to navigate with. Use layouts that load fast as well, for visitors don't like waiting on a page that's taking forever to show.
After getting the layout finished, start creating the pages. You can either choose to do one page at a time, or list all the links on the navbar(s) and then start working on the pages.
While making your website bigger and bigger, begin making buttons of either 88x31 pixels or 88x16 pixels. These are made so your affiliates can use them to link to your website. You can create as many buttons as you want, and don't forget to put your website name or abbreviation onto the button.
If you think you have enough pages and content, start finding other websites to affiliate with. A beginner website is not likely to have a big chance of affiliating with a super popular mega website. Try to start affiliating with sites that are similar to yours in size--and make sure they're in the same category as your site.
After getting a few affiliates, you can begin working on extras for your site like a fun section or a forum, oekaki, etc. These attract more visitors.
Once you think you have gained in popularity, start advertising. Popular forums are the best, and keep a link to your website in your signatures.
Well, that's about it! Good luck, and stay devoted! ^____^
