Prologue || Chapter One

Prologue

Have to get away! So much terror! So much blood! I thought. Is it just my imagination, or are they chasing me?

I looked back to find out.

I would forever regret that moment.

I was relieved, they were not chasing me. I did not slow down, for I was going too fast. I turned around so that I could see obstacles in my path.

It was too late.

A sharp, piercing feeling, like a needle going through my skull, engulfed me with pain. I tried to stand up, to find water, but darkness overtook me, and I submitted to the painless sleep.

Chapter One

A girl walked along the path. Her name was Thorn. She had tangly, wild red hair that reached down to her shoulder blades, and was covered with freckles. She wore blue jeans and a white t-shirt, along with white sneakers. She carried a green handbag, which carried money. She was going to the Pokemart to buy food for her mother. Her father had died, long ago, before she was born, and her mother did not want another husband. So it was just the two of them.

She stopped as she saw a barbed wire fence. She new this place. It was dangerous, full of Haunter that would steal your life away and Duskinor that would take you to the spirit world and never bring you back. Thorn didn't like Ghost Pokemon, especially Gengar, which she found just plain scary. But this wasn't what made her stop.

A bush grew near the abandoned lot. This bush's leaves stayed fresh and green year-long. But now, a few of the leaves were stained. It was black, like tar, yet it just as drippy and runny as milk.

Further on, she saw a strange creature. It was definitely not human, but it was not like any Pokemon she had ever heard of, either. She had heard of Mew, with its soft, pink fur, concial ears, and large feet. She had seen Venusaur, with their large flower and four stiff legs. She had read about Pupitar, with their cocoon-ish appearance and dull gray color, with two emotionless eyes observing the world around it. But this creature was unlike any of those. For one thing, it was jet black as a Gengar's heart. For another, its eyes were obviously closed, but its eyelids were red, like blood, with only a thin yellow slit in the middle, which gave the impression that, even when asleep, or dead, it was always watching you. It had a body in the shape of an oval, ears that made a loop at the tip, and it was obviously hearing through the empty space in between the two sides of the loop. Its tail was very similar to an Umbreon's, but it had two of them, with no rings, and its legs were thin, yet graceful; it was apparantly very fast. It would have looked rather cute, in fact, if it hadn't been for the claws. Four metallic, sharp, gleaming claws grew from each foot, two on front, two on back. This meant that, no doubt, it was a predator. It had more of the tar-like substance, and with horror, Thorn realized that it was blood.

She hesitated. This creature obviously needed help, but was it a trap? An ambush? Perhaps the Ghost Pokemon wanted her to join their ranks! She shuddered, but went over to the eerie thing, and lifted it up into her arms. She ran towards the closest Pokemon Center, in Phantom City, which was also where the Pokemart she was headed to originally was.

Finally, she walked through the sliding doors, and thankfully Nurse Joy was was not attending anyone. This creature needed immediate help.

"Nurse Joy!"

She looked up from her paperback novel, and gasped as she saw the thing. "What is that...whatever?"

"I don't know, but I was coming from my house and by the Spirit Lot I saw it and it needs help really really badly so help!"

Nurse Joy didn't even correct her grammar, as she usually would've, but instead picked it up and took it to the Emergency Room.

"Go and buy what you were told to from the Pokemart, Thorn, I'll look after him-I mean, her-I mean, it. Oh, whatever the thing is. Don't worry, she'll be safe with me."

Thorn believed her, so she went off to the Pokemart, to buy milk, cereal, and bottled water.

She returned to find that, indeed, Nurse Joy had taken care of it. The wounds were patched up, the blood wiped away, and it had regained conciousness. Its eyes were open, but they were exactly the same as the eyelids, except for they glimmered and gleamed in the artificial lights of the Pokemon Center.

"This young lady saved your life," said Nurse Joy. "Perhaps you should go with her, so she could take care of you."

It gave no sound, just a blank nod of approval.

"Good, then. You might have to carry her, Thorn, she's having trouble walking."

"Alright, then, Nurse Joy. I'll see you around."

She headed down the path, the creature cradled in her arms.

"Well, we can't just keep on calling you 'it.' What's your name?"

She heard a voice, but the creature had no mouth to speak from. It seemed to come from the whole thing.

"My...name? What is a name?"

"It's what your family calls you."

"Family?...I do not understand this...family...But I seem to remember...My tribe used to call me..." It let out a sigh, and closed its eerie eyes.

"Yes?"

Its eyes snapped open. "They used to call me Shadowaker." And it shut its eyes again, and fell into a deep sleep.
