Using Gradients

Gradients are very cool and useful if you want a 3-D or high-tech look. This tutorials describes how to use them properly.

Basics

The gradient tool is indicated by this icon: . You can then open up the Gradient Editor, as seen here:

As you can see, there are many different types of gradients, and you can also make your own.

Using Them

To use a gradient, select the one you want and when the little crosshair appears, drag it in a horizontal or diagonal line across your canvas and the gradient will appear. Sometimes, if you're messy with the dragging, the gradient may appear lopsided or the wrong way you want.

But no matter how you drag it, the entire layer you're using the gradient on will be filled. What if you only want it to fill a certain space? Then the Magic Wand tool will be involved.

If you want a specific area to be filled with a gradient, click the Magic Wand tool and then click within the area. It should then be outlined by "marching ants", and now select the gradient tool, but DO NOT deselect the outlined area. Use the gradient tool within the "marching ants", and only that specific area will be filled by a gradient.

More

You can also create your own gradients and save them. That way you can always load them and use them over and over again. ^-^
