Adding a Glowing Outline

It is possible to add a glow to your image without having to use Photoshop's effect. Why bother? Because depending on how your layers are arranged and what's on your layers, the easy way to do it may cause problems. So, I will teach you a simple, manual way to apply a glowing outline to an image.

1.) First off, create a new image file with your desired height and width. Fill it up with a color that's preferably not too light (white will not work, unless you want the glow to be a color other than white).

2.) Copy/paste the sprite/image you want to add the glow to. DO NOT MERGE LAYERS. This is what I have:

3.) Go to your Layer palette and select the Background layer that's filled in with your color. Then click the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layer palette.

You should now have this:

4.) Make sure your brush color is set to white for a white glow, and now go to your Brush selection. You can use any of the Default Brushes at the top of the list, but I prefer the 9 pixeled brush that's very faded around the edges for maximum effect, as seen below:

5.) After you've selected your brush, click the Magnifying tool (a tiny magnifying glass), and at the top horizontal toolbar you should see the below. Click "Fit on Screen" to make your life easier. Or, just keep magnifying until the individual pixels are pretty big.

6.) This is an important step. BE SURE that you are on the layer BETWEEN the background layer and the layer with your image pasted on it. If you did not change any of the layer names, it should say "Layer 2".

7.) Because your image is magnified, the brush you selected should be pretty big, too. Now just trace around your sprite/etc., and it should form a glowing outline. However, nothing should be on top of the image.

8.) To check that you did it correctly if you can't tell just by looking at it, go to your Layer palette and you should see the following:

Congrats, you're done! Mine looks like this:
